Apreciado Representante de la Sociedad Civil:

Es de mi agrado saludarles para brindarles información preliminar sobre la XXXIX Asamblea General de la OEA, lo cual se celebrará en San Pedro Sula, Honduras del 31 de mayo al 2 de junio del 2008.  La Declaración de la próxima Asamblea General en San Pedro Sula se enfocara en el tema “Hacia una cultura de no violencia.”  Como país anfitrión, el Gobierno de Honduras ha propuesto orientar la Declaración de la Asamblea General como un formato de debate sobre el vínculo entre la no violencia y la democracia participativa.

Debido al artículo 10 de AG/RES. 1737 (XXX-O/00), el Departamento de Asuntos Internacionales, por medio de la Secretaría General de la OEA, enviará una carta oficial de invitación a todos los representantes de la sociedad civil aprobados por el Consejo Permanente para asistir a la Asamblea General, la cual será requerida para poder ingresar.

De esta manera, el Departamento de Asuntos Internacionales continuará diseminando información a las organizaciones de la sociedad civil sobre la próxima Asamblea General y el proceso de acreditación en cuanto este disponible y se aproxime la fecha límite. Así mismo, se creara en Internet una página Web la cual compilara la información logística y substantiva sobre la XXXIX Asamblea General de la OEA en los próximos meses, mientras que en la página Web de la sociedad civil de la OEA incorporaremos información sobre oportunidades y regulaciones para la participación de la sociedad civil en la
asamblea y un boletín informativo dirigido para representantes de las OSC. Entretanto, por favor contáctenos ante cualquier duda o pregunta relacionada con la Asamblea General.

Dear Civil Society Representative,

I would like to take this opportunity to provide you with preliminary information regarding the XXXIX OAS General Assembly, which will take place in San Pedro Sula, Honduras on May 31 – June 2, 2008.  The Declaration of the upcoming General Assembly in
San Pedro Sula focuses on the topic “Towards a culture of nonviolence.”  In its capacity as host country, the Government of Honduras has proposed orienting the Declaration of the General Assembly as a debate on the link between nonviolence and participant democracy.

Pursuant to article 10 of AG/RES. 1737 (XXX-O/00), the Department of International Affairs, on behalf of the OAS General Secretariat, will send all civil society organization representatives approved by the Permanent Council to attend the General
Assembly an official letter of invitation, which will be required in order to gain entry.

The Department of International Affairs will continue to distribute information regarding the upcoming General Assembly and the process of accreditation to civil society organizations as the registration deadline nears and information and documents
are made available. A website compiling logistical and substantive information on the XXXIX OAS General Assembly will be posted in the coming months, while the OAS civil society website will incorporate facts on opportunities and regulations for civil
society participation in the assembly, as well as an informative bulletin intended for CSO representatives.  Meanwhile, please feel free to contact this Department with any questions or concerns related to the General Assembly.
